What's Happening With Whidbey Quakers?
Advocacy Training Workshop
When: Saturday, March 16, from 1-4 p.m.
Where: The Fireside Room of the Langley United Methodist Church, located at 301 Anthes Ave. in Langley, WA
To register: https://act.fcnl.org/event/advocacy-teams_attend/679
Whidbey Island Friends Meeting members Tom Ewell and John Goertzel are organizing a Whidbey Island/Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) Advocacy Team to form a well-trained, well-informed, and team-oriented initiative that will specifically organize to address issues of peace and justice in the federal system, particularly to develop a working relationship with Rep. Rick Larsen, who is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell.
The first step in this effort has been to form a Host Committee that includes Tom and John along with members of other local faith communities including Dave and Karen Anderson and Dick Hall. Their purpose is to host a larger initial gathering of those interested in learning more about the Advocacy Team initiative and possibly joining the ongoing lobbying efforts. The workshop will be led a Sarah Freeman-Woolpert, a young staff member from the FCNL in Washington, DC to facilitate the training and answer questions.
Much of the success of the FCNL lobbying over its 75 year history is because of an extensive, informed, and active constituent base throughout the U.S. The most recent organizational initiative has been this Advocacy Team concept.. There are now about a hundred of these teams throughout the country that are supported by FCNL staff and linked through a coordinated network of regular briefings and mutual support.
Although Advocacy Teams may address other issues of importance during any given year, it is important that they focus on one particular, critical issue each year. This year all the national Advocacy Teams will focus on repealing the Authority to Use Military Force (AUMF) law passed shortly after 9/11 that has allowed the U.S. to engage in “endless wars” for the past eighteen years.
The goal is to have at least 15 participants at the March 16 workshop. This is an information only workshop and does not commit attendees to ongoing involvement. At the least it will be an excellent lobby training, so if you are interested, please register as soon as possible at:
